This Year's Rankings Were Influenced by a Shift in U.S. News' Methodology Previously, the ratings were based mainly on reputation and the ability to select students. Nevertheless, the 2024 - 2025 edition prioritized graduate employment (60% of the total score) more. The shift signals a greater emphasis on the factor of whether a law school can provide adequate training for the students entering the job market.
The changed methodology, however, may have affected law schools differently. For schools, the new criteria that emphasize employment outcomes are likely to go in favor of schools that have robust career service programs and alumni networks. On the other hand, the schools that have acknowledged themselves for their theoretical rigor or focus on scholarship may have noted the fall in their rankings.
To students, this shift could be the cause for the increased attention to the development of practical skills and career preparation during their study in law school. On the other hand, it is imperative to always keep in mind the fact that these rankings are just one of the many things to take into account.
The Importance of a Holistic Approach
Even though the U.S. News college rankings are popular, they are all the same, just a part of the process when selecting a law school.
Program Offerings: Is the school having specializations that are in line with your aspiration career?
Career Services: What tools are available to guide you through the process of getting a job that you always dreamed about?
Alumni Network: What is the status of the school’s alumni network as well as its connection with prospective employers?
Location: Do you want to remain in your hometown and practice law?
Cost: Would you be able to afford the whole amount of enrollment fee, which includes tuition, fees, and off-campus housing?
