New research project to explore staff and student experiences of capstone assessments, to help shape future policy at UCL.
What were the first year capstone assessments?
In the summer of 2020, UCL moved all planned first-year assessments to a single capstone assignment as an emergency response to the national lockdown resulting from the covid-19 pandemic.
This was done to alleviate stress for students and staffand to avoid overloading online platforms.
Capstoneassessmentsaimed to allowstudents to synthesize their learning and demonstrate in a single piece of assessment how they had achieved the intended learning outcomes for their programme of study.
About the research project
The choice to assess first-year students with a single capstone assessment wasa unique response in the sector and fairly innovative initsown right. Wewere keen to explore the experiences of staff and students involved in them.
The outcomes of this evaluation, completed in November 2021, will help shape future assessment policy at UCL and could provide the basis for further research in this area.
ATI Capstone Content Review is designed to help students assess and remediate on important content. Students will spend approximately 4-6 hours per week engaging in content review, depending on current knowledge level. ATI Capstone Content Review should be completed within eight (8) weeks.
The Migration Agents Capstone Assessment is an independent competency-based assessment that tests a candidate's skills and knowledge to meet the Occupational Competency Standards (OCS) for Australian Registered Migration Agents.
If you happen to fail the capstone exam, don't worry! You can retake it as many times as needed to pass, without having to retake the entire course. Additionally, upon submitting the exam, any incorrect answers will be displayed, giving you valuable insight into areas that may need more focus.
Each exam counts for 25% of the total grade of the Capstone Exam course. You will need to obtain a total score of at least 50% to pass the Capstone Exam course.
A “capstone” project is the crowning achievement of an academic program, as it combines all the skills and knowledge gained into a culminating conclusion.
A capstone project is typically a final project that allows students to showcase the knowledge and skills they have gained throughout their academic program and apply them to real-world problems and issues.
Can you fail a capstone course? Yes, you can fail a capstone course. However, failing a capstone course at some universities could disqualify you from graduating from that particular major or program.
The capstone process culminates in a paper or presentation that measures students' skills in communication, information dissemination, and application of evidence-based practice skills.
