Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Can I get college credit?

      • Yes, you may receive college credit if you pass each AP Exam with a score of 3 or higher and pass the course for KO.

  2. What will that college credit be considered at my university?

      • Policies currently in place across the country include the following:

        • Credit for a core course in English that is both writing-intensive and focused on inquiry (a large, public flagship).

        • Credit for a first year Independent Studies course (a mid-sized, regional public institution).

        • Six elective credits per course in the AP Capstone program, with care taken to ensure that degree plans offer enough space in the electives category to make this credit award meaningful (a highly-selective private institution focused on STEM fields).

        • Admittance to the Honors program and a merit scholarship for students who complete the entire AP Capstone program (a mid-sized, regional public institution).

        • General education units for students completing either or both components of the AP Capstone program and subject-specific application of the credits awarded for AP Research after departmental review of the student’s paper (a large public flagship).

  3. Do I have to take both courses?

        • Yes, in order to receive any recognition you must complete both classes. See the recognition tab.

  4. What year can I register?

        • 9th, 10th, and 11th graders may register for AP Seminar.

  5. Can I only take AP Research?

        • No, AP Seminar is a prerequisite to AP Research and must be completed prior to the second year course.

  6. Can I enroll in the AP Capstone Program and IB?

        • Yes, however both involve an extensive research paper at consecutive times, so we highly advise you speak to the adults in your life about the commitment it will take.

  7. Are there outside readings?

        • There are no out of class novels. We mainly focus on short passages, like articles and it is frequent.

  8. Is there homework?

        • Our goal is to complete majority of the program during instructional time. What you do not finish in class will become homework.

  9. Is there a midterm and final exam?

        • No, there is not a midterm or final for AP Seminar and AP Research.

  10. What do I need for this program?

        • Drive to read and write

        • Participate in class

        • School issued laptop & charger daily

        • Complaint free attitude

        • Desire to complete the work in order to progress and push yourself academically

        • Daily completion of work (meeting deadlines)

  11. Is this an easy elective?

        • No, you need the drive to excel through growth mindset. I will not tolerate insubordination. It is an elective and you can be removed.

  12. What is AP Research?

        • The brunt of the work gets done in AP Seminar because by the time you get to AP Research you will be successful enough to spend a year on a single paper like you would with a dissertation/grad thesis. Please see the classes tab.

  13. What is AP Seminar?

        • 1st Semester - Fall: Teaching you how to do the IRR, TMP, IWA, and IMP. We use different topics that you’re interested in to learn these items. Please see the classes tab.

        • 2nd Semester - Spring: You are now ready to take control and complete the IRR, TMP, IWA, and IMP on your own with a new topic. During this semester, these officially count and are submitted to CollegeBoard as part of your EOC average. Please see the classes tab.

  14. Do we receive a cord/stole for graduation?

        • Yes, AP Capstone Diploma Candidates will receive a stole (student cost) and AP Capstone Certificate Candidates will receive a cord. Those who are in the courses but did not meet CollegeBoard expectations on AP Exams will not receive the recognition items.

  15. What are some of the major/minor grades for KO's Skyward Grade-book?

        • Major:

            • Any of the reports for CB can be taken for a major grade.

            • Individual Research Report

            • Team Presentation & Defense

            • Individual Written Argument

            • Individual Presentation & Defense

          • Minor:

            • Frequent Progress checks on major grades

            • In class questions about what you have learned

            • Minor steps taken as we decipher credible articles/sources

  1. Are there any out-of-pocket costs?

          • Yes, the AP Seminar Exam costs $144 and the AP Research Exam costs $144. Students will need to purchase a 1-inch binder to keep in class. The stole/cord costs $6. There will be a requirement for printed copies of essays throughout the year.

How impressive is AP Capstone? ›

AP Capstone is a powerful indicator of college readiness on a student's transcript and helps students stand out to colleges in the application process. Research has found that students who take AP Capstone courses are more likely to persist in college and earn higher first-year college GPAs.

How many AP classes do you need to pass for AP Capstone? ›

Four AP courses are required for the Capstone diploma, but a student can take more with a guidance counselor's approval.

Can you still pass AP Seminar without presenting IMP and TMP? ›

For example, if an AP Seminar student is unable to participate in the Team Project and Presentation, the student could choose to complete the Individual Research-Based Essay and Presentation and the End-of-Course Exam and accept the AP score earned from these two completed assessments.

Do colleges look at AP Capstone? ›

The AP Capstone Diploma is increasingly recognized in admissions by higher education institutions around the world. Many colleges and universities offer credit and/or placement for a qualifying score in AP Seminar, AP Research, or both.

Is AP Capstone a hard class? ›

There are three AP Capstone difficulty levels: easy, medium, and hard. Easy AP Capstone tasks are those that don't require a lot of effort. Why is AP Capstone more expensive? ›

Having taken both exams, they cost more because AP Seminar and Research require evaluators to look at papers. AP Seminar consists of two papers one with a group and another with individual research. Each paper a little more or less 10 pages. To get someone evaluate this paper according to runbric takes more money.
